Portrait
Othmar Schmid was born in 1955 in Zurich. Today he lives in Zug and paints in his studio in Baar as a self-taught artist.
His pictures are profound reflections drawn from within. This creates an interesting interaction of colour, material and size. With careful composition and a pleasant balance in terms of colour and form his pictures are a mirror of the soul.
The artist receives his inspiration from the environment and is affected by the contrasting moods and ambiences. He want’s to express the ordinary, the fortuitousness, but most of all the liveliness in his pictures.
A visit at Hans Falk’s Studio in Stromboli has left an unforgettable impression and has been an enduring inspiration to the artist.
With joyful curiosity the artist combines paper, metal, keys, cardboard, fabric, notes, old payslips, postcards, string, sand, chalk, marble flour and lots more. In a refined mixing technique he is creating a multilayered wholeness that holds many surprises for the attentive observer. Fragments such as coloured glass splinters or the silt, the sand or jetsam and flotsam washed on shore by the sea, proudly joining together on canvas in great symbolism what once was lost or broken.
Othmar Schmid isn’t a man of grand words; he’s rather a keen worker on his personal metaphorical language.
A picture is not finished until the story is told, a statement has been made and peace found. Othmar Schmid creates contemplative and powerful works of art with an intense language of colours. The pictures tell about life and encourage the viewer to contemplate and dream.
